House Aims to Reduce Campus Piracy

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008 by Patrick Ross

Whatever the amount of theft involved, stealing creators' works on a taxpayer-funded campus network has no place in one's experience of higher learning. Thus, I'm pleased with an effort by House Education and Labor Chairman George Miller and others to reduce campus piracy through unobtrusive steps. Those steps are found in HR-4137, the College Opportunity and Affordability Act of 2007. The Copyright Alliance has sent a letter to key officials on Capitol Hill praising this effort, as the bill likely comes to the House floor tomorrow, February 7.

Taking it Back (Your Creative Works, That Is)

In our ongoing effort to provide educational resources on copyright and protecting artists' rights, I give you a link to what is quite possibly the most comprehensive list of tools for artists I've ever seen. The article by Jessica Hupp has nearly 100 links — some a bit more reliable and objective than others — that on the whole could be of assistance to many an artist who is a victim of theft of creative works. Any significant problems, however, should be brought to a copyright lawyer schooled in artists' rights. (In other words, use this site to treat a headache, see your doctor about a persistent migraine.)
