A Good Week for Copyright

This is a good week for copyright.

First, there is news
out of New York
of new legislation designed to fight copyright infringement.
In addition, Andrew Cuomo will be appointing an official dedicated to IP
enforcement.

Copyright law is federal, but copyright infringrment hurts all 50 states (see
our website for details). Last year, LA's mayor set up a task force on IP
enforcement, demonstrating local politicians can understand the importance of
the issue as well.

This is the time of year, as the weather starts to warm, that communities begin to prepare for a wide variety of outdoor festivals and events, ranging from music and street festivals to sport and family events.  I had the opportunity yesterday to usher in the warm weather at one of this season's first outdoor visual arts shows in Washington, DC.

SARASOTA, FL: Licensing is almost as old as copyright itself, and when
done voluntarily is a great testament to how the free market naturally flows
along the path of least resistance, in economic terms lower transaction costs.
The onset of online distribution, however, has challenged decades-old licensing
models.

That is true in every copyright industry, including church music publishers.
For almost 20 years, the Christian Copyright Licensing International
has been licensing copyright within churches, everything from photocopying sheet
music to reproducing overhead slides of lyrics displayed to congregants. Change
is afoot however. CCLI's Howard Rachinski revealed here today the details of an
