Artists Meet to Discuss Important Issues, Make a Difference

Thursday, June 5th, 2008 by Lucinda M. Dugger

A group of like-minded creative individuals met recently in Northeast D.C.  Brought together by the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, the artists and creators met to discuss topics and issues that affect a broad range of artists: pursuing a gallery presence, developing a business-like demeanor, and copyright.

As one of three presenters, I spoke briefly about the Copyright Alliance and the importance of copyright for artists and their creative works.  I also talked about the need for creators – who find this issue important – to speak up, to make their voices heard.

A good portion of the evening was organized in such a way that artists and presenters alike could mingle, exchange ideas, and get to know each other.  Many in the room were eager to discuss with me how they could copyright their creative works, boast about their already impressive artistic resumes, or simply show their support for our efforts.

The creative energy in the room couldn't have been higher.  And, what I saw and heard from all whom I talked to is that artists care.  They care about the world we live in.  They care about the exchange of ideas.  And, they are passionate about having a voice – and expressing it – on a range of issues.  After all, that's what creating is all about: being moved about an issue in such a way that compels one to speak through song or paint or written word.

Wanda Aikens, executive director of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, began the meeting with a quote from Margaret Meade, "A small group of thoughtful people could change the world.  Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

It's true; I saw it that evening as artists talked about what moves them and how they can make a difference.  I really think that every time artists come together to share ideas or create something new, the world is changed a little.
