Speaking with One Voice

Thursday, June 12th, 2008 by Patrick Ross

On Monday the Copyright Alliance launched the culmination of months of work and a year-long vision, the one voi©e campaign. What is one voi©e? Quite simply, it is artists and creators from every imaginable field coming together as one voice in support of their rights.

Largely the creation of our Director of Outreach and Field Initiatives Lucinda Dugger, we have created on our web site a private social network for artists and creators. For a nominal fee, these talented individuals can create their own home pages, interact with other artists and creators directly and through a forum board. Artists and creators can discuss the process of creativity, share tips and insights on creation and the business of art. They can promote their works and shows, and they can seek the assistance of other creators. And they can discuss the burning policy issues of the day affecting creators, and can make their voices heard on Capitol Hill and elsewhere.

We'll be engaged in this network, passing on information on public policy and modifying the site as requested by one voi©e members. But this will be a bottom-up web 2.0 experience for these creators, who have some experience at thinking imaginatively. It should be a lot of fun.

Meaning no disparagement to grassroots networks consisting of mailing lists or "friend" links on social networks, this dues-paying network of musicians, songwriters and music publishers; filmmakers and broadcast programming makers; business and entertainment software programmers; book, magazine and newspaper authors and publishers; photographers, illustrators, graphic artists and painters; and even those involved in amateur and professional sports will truly be unrivaled, and will have a strong, united voice supporting the rights of creators.
