Introduction to Fair Use

Monday, August 18th, 2008 by Patrick Ross

There’s a lot of information circulating on fair use in our society, some of it more reliable than others. Here at the Copyright Alliance, we believe fair use is an important safety valve allowing new creators and educators to make modest use of copyrighted works, but we also recognize that fair use has important limitations.

We’ve long had a tutorial on the subject on our web site. Now we’ve placed a short (four minute) video on our home page; it can also be found on our page of videos, which is growing.

This is NOT meant to be legal advice. In fact, we mention in the video that there is no bright-line test for fair use, and anyone seeking information on a specific case should contact an attorney. But we feel this will help clear the air on some of the misleading viewpoints on fair use, and we hope you enjoy it.
