Thursday, April 23rd, 2009 by Lucinda M. Dugger
April 23rd has been chosen by UNESCO to be World Book and Copyright Day. It’s a day to celebrate the significance of authors in our lives, promote the importance of reading, and reflect upon the contributions that books have had throughout societies and cultures worldwide.
The past six years have brought a range of celebrations from universities, libraries, and cities. For a complete list of events, visit the official website. However, some of the events planned for this year include:
UNESCO headquarters will host a “big read”, a round table on literate environments.
The State Library of Victoria (Australia) is launching an exhibition called The Independent Type: Books and Writing in Victoria that explores the history of writing in the state of Victoria from pre-contact times until the present day.
The Coalición de Libreros (Booksellers Association) of Mexico organizes a series of events, including a reading marathon.
Events for the Nigeria National Committee on Read Campaign include a reading competition for students, a celebration of reading in mother languages, and an art and book exhibition.
